I recently read Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes.  It was first day of my vacation and I read it in a day.  Devoured it might be a better word.  I anticipated the book would share stories, chapter after chapter, of Shonda learning how to say Yes to more things in all aspects of her life. The book was so much more than that.  She shared life changes she went through, courageously and vulnerably.  She’s got me thinking about some life stuff, because thinking about her shows’ story lines and carrying about the characters wasn’t enough LOL.  She’s one creative and talented writer.

On page 56 in Year of Yes, Shonda is speaking about a life pivot point for Cristina Yang, a main character in her show Grey’s Anatomy, played by Sandra Oh.    Here’s what she wrote:

Cristina has learned what she needs to know. Her toolbox is full. She has learned to not let go of the pieces of herself that she needs in order to be what someone else wants. She’s learned not to compromise. She’s learned not to settle. She’s learned, as difficult as it is, how to be her own sun.

How close are you to this, in your life?

If you answer is “OWNING IT!”   Ta-DA to you & see you for next week’s blog ;0)

For the rest of you:

What’s the gap between where you are currently and fully owning you?

Working your way backwards (the “Start with the end in mind” Stephen Covey technique), record your steps to get to OWNING it.

Make them small enough that you can make them, and big enough to see progress.

Imagine if we were all taught as children how to “be our own sun”.
